Here are the top 5 reasons students fail their road test—and how you can avoid them:

1. Improper Observation at Intersections

One of the most common mistakes is not fully scanning your surroundings at stop signs or traffic lights. Examiners want to see that you’re checking left, right, and ahead before moving forward. A quick glance isn’t enough—be deliberate and clear in your checks.

Tip: Practice full observation routines with your instructor until they become second nature.

2. Poor Lane Changes

Many students struggle with proper lane change technique. Forgetting to check blind spots, not signaling, or drifting across lanes can all result in points deducted—or worse, an automatic fail.

Tip: Use the full mirror-signal-shoulder-check process every time you change lanes.

3. Lack of Control During Parking

Parking—curbside and reverse parking—can be stressful during a test. Touching the curb, poor positioning, or taking too long can cost you.

Tip: Practice in different areas with varying curb lengths and traffic flow. Familiarity builds confidence.

4. Failure to Yield Right-of-Way

Road tests are about safety and decision-making. Not yielding when required—such as at 4-way stops or when turning left—can be dangerous and lead to automatic failure.

Tip: Always know who has the right-of-way, and when in doubt, yield to be safe.

5. Driving Too Fast or Too Slowly
